Travel: Tom Parsons runs the website BestFares.com. And he says that if you don’t have to travel right away, wait until mid-September to book your trip. Because that’s when he predicts great deals on airline tickets, hotel rooms, and rental cars.
Speaking of cars: Experts at the auto pricing website Edmunds.com believe lower demand will motivate automakers to cut prices AND increase rebates on new vehicles, which should happen by the end of September.
And if you’re thinking of getting married, there’s no time like the present. Alan Fields is co-author of Bridal Bargains. And he says that caterers, florists, and wedding halls slammed by the recession are willing to discount prices by 20-percent. And those that don’t offer cash discounts will often sweeten the deal by tossing in a wedding cake or a case of champagne. But weddings are one area where it looks bad to advertise specials - so you have to ask if they have any perks or discounts.
And finally: If you need work done on your home, go for it. According to Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies, a tight economy means homeowners can expect more contractors to bid on their projects and more competition means lower prices. Just be sure to check the contractor’s references - and get a detailed contract in writing.
