About 50 million Americans are currently owed more than $35 Billion dollars. That's according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. You or your family could have a secret stash you don't even know about. Here's how to find out:
- There are millions of security deposits, and checking and savings accounts that people have forgotten about. The money becomes the state's for safe keeping until it's claimed. So log on to the website MissingMoney.com and type in your name. It's a free national search for missing money.
- Then go to your attic and see what that ugly old vase is worth. Almost everybody has something in their home that's worth more than they think. To find out how much your junk is worth, go to the library and check out the book "What's It Worth" by Tony Hyman.
- One last tip to find missing money: Go to your state's official website. If you don't have a computer, most libraries now have ones you can use. Once you're on your state's website, go to the treasurer's page or the comptroller's page. They'll have a list of unclaimed funds. You enter your name and the site will tell you if any of those funds are in your name. It might be only be 50 cents from the gas company but hey, that's a pack of chewing gum!
