You see Chihuahuas on the arms of celebrities like Paula Abdul and Christina Aguilera, and in movies like "Legally Blonde". But it's hardly the first time a dog breed has become popular because of Hollywood.
Back in the 60s, sheepdogs became popular after Disney's movie "The Shaggy Dog" came out. In the 90s, Dalmatians were all the rage after the live-action remake of "101 Dalmatians". And of course, Jack Russell Terriers had a breeding boom after the TV show "Frasier" debuted.
Well, today, the "in" dog is the teacup. Dogs weighing four pounds or less are considered "teacups" and the hottest breeds right now are Maltese, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, and miniature Poodles. But just because they're small, doesn't mean they're not a handful. Here's what you may not know about pint-sized pooches according to Newsweek magazine.
  • First, they're not cheap. A purebred can cost thousands.
  • Next, they're delicate. A fall from a chair or a vigorous hug from a child can kill them.
  • Teacup sized dogs are also prone to hypoglycemia. The need to be fed every 3 hours.
  • Teacup puppies need round-the-clock supervision   and even grown dogs shouldn't be left alone for more than 2 hours!
  • And although they're not a fashion accessory, they really are safest being carried around.
If you want one, go to a reputable breeder. Do not buy a dog over the internet. You need to see the dog and the breeder in person. If you're unsure, ask a Vet or a dog trainer. And don't buy a puppy from anybody who says they'll ship it to you. Trust me, that's a package you won't want to open.
